On Aug 10, 2020, Cboe Futures Exchange, LLC launched trading in Mini VIXTM futures with a $100 multiplier to offer greater flexibility and precision in volatility risk management. The product has been well received as its daily volume surpassed the 100,000-contract mark for the first time on August 27. To help market participants better understand Mini VIX futures, Tim Edwards, managing director of index strategy from S&P Dow Jones Indices, and Russell Rhoads, head of research and consulting at EQDerivatives and author of Trading VIX Derivatives and The VIX Trader’s Handbook, will share their views on the current dynamics in the volatility market and provide a deep dive into real-world examples of how market participants are implementing VIX strategies to manage risk and generate income. The presentation will cover:
- The essence of the VIX Index and its performance during COVID-19
- How market participants have reacted to the VIX Index historically and its use as a global volatility indicator
- Using VIX options and standard and Mini VIX futures for portfolio hedging, shorting volatility, and calendar spread strategies
