Thought of the week

Flash manufacturing PMIs released last week showed some signs that manufacturing weakness may be nearing a turning point. In the U.S., the flash reading inched higher to 51.5, the firmest reported since April. Elsewhere, the euro area was slightly higher relative to the final September reading at 45.7, while manufacturing activity in Japan fell only modestly to 48.5 from 48.9. Reassuringly, in Europe, both Germany, which has been at the epicenter of the slowdown in manufacturing, and France edged slightly higher to 41.9 and 50.5, respectively.

While both Japan and the euro area PMIs remain below 50, signaling contraction, the stabilization is rather encouraging. Perhaps more so, and as shown in this week’s chart, the future manufacturing output expectations subcomponent has been firming in both the U.S. and euro area in recent months, suggesting a somewhat more optimistic outlook on business conditions. The still very apparent weakness in global manufacturing may well be cited by Jay Powell this week as a justification for a third consecutive rate cut. However, signs of stabilization also give the Fed a reason to pause before making any other rate moves, as a slow-moving global manufacturing sector tries to turn the corner.
